João Bonifácio Serra
(1949-2023)
Historian and Professor, João Bonifácio Serra was a key figure of the national arts, culture and politics. He was currently holder of the Chair in “Arts and Culture Management, Cities and Creativity”, awarded by UNESCO in 2018 to the School of Arts and Design of Caldas da Rainha, and integrated researcher of LIDA – Research Laboratory in Design and Arts (ESAD.CR/IPL), of which he was a member of the coordinating committee. Jubilee Coordinator Professor of the Polytechnic of Leiria, he was member of the installation commission of ESAD.CR, teacher in the areas of History, Heritage and Culture and director of the degree courses in Cultural Animation and Master in Cultural Management. He was also a lecturer at ISCTE, Faculdade de Letras da Universidade de Lisboa, and at Universidade Nova de Lisboa.
He presided over the organization of Guimarães Capital Europeia da Cultura, in 2012, where he also worked as a programmer. He was commissioner of the Programme Caldas Cidade Cerâmica – MOLDA, between 2015 and 2019, which led to the attribution to Caldas da Rainha of the title of creative city by UNESCO, promoter of the candidacy of Alcobaça to UNESCO Creative City of Gastronomy and coordinator of the Strategic Council of the candidacy of Leiria to European Capital of Culture 2027.
Commissioner of several exhibitions, namely “José Relvas: Contemplative Conspirator”, in the Portuguese Parliament. He has participated and directed research projects and published studies on themes of history and heritage. Among the most recent are the project “Ceramics, Heritage and Sustainable Product – from education to industry”, supported by the Foundation for Science and Technology (FCT), and the studies “Artist in Search of his History: Luís Ferreira da Silva (1928-2016)” and “Glass Shrouds: Drawing and painting by Tereza Arriaga on the Vidreiros da Marinha Grande”, for the Neorealism Museum, under the coordination of Raquel Henriques da Silva. He also co-coordinated, with Jorge Simões, José Gameiro and José Pedro Castanheira, “Once upon a time Jorge Sampaio – Stories and images” (Lisbon, 2021). Yet to be published is “O Parlamento na República (1910-1926)”, in collaboration with Luís Bigotte Chorão, a work sponsored by the Portuguese Parliament, and “As Gárgulas da Torre do Tombo”, which results from a research project supported by LIDA (ESAD.CR/IPL).
He coordinated the preparation of the Preliminary Programme for the New Ceramics Museum of Caldas da Rainha at the request of the City Council. He was scientific and cultural coordinator of Casa dos Patudos – Alpiarça Museum, member of the Commission of Contents of the National Museum of Resistance and Freedom of Peniche and integrated the National Commission for the Commemorations of the Centenary of the Republic.
Between 1997 and 2006, he was adviser and Head of the Civil House of the President of the Republic. He was awarded several decorations for the provision in functions within the scope of the Portuguese State’s relations with other States (Luxembourg, Italy, Greece, France, Finland, Norway, Tunisia, Algeria, Morocco, Turkey, Canada). In Portugal he was a member of the Council of National Orders and was awarded the Grand Officer of the Order of Liberty and the Grand Cross of the Order of Christ (2005) and the gold medals of the cities of Caldas da Rainha (2000), Guimarães (2013) and Leiria (2022).

Historiador e Professor, João Bonifácio Serra (1949-2023) foi uma figura incontornável das artes, cultura e política nacionais. Era atualmente titular da Cátedra em “Gestão das Artes e da Cultura, Cidades e Criatividade”, atribuída pela UNESCO em 2018 à Escola de Artes e Design das Caldas da Rainha, e investigador integrado do LIDA – Laboratório de Investigação em Design e Artes (ESAD.CR/IPL), do qual era membro da comissão coordenadora. Professor Coordenador Jubilado do Politécnico de Leiria, foi membro da comissão instaladora da ESAD.CR, docente nas áreas de História, Património e Cultura e coordenador dos cursos de licenciatura em Animação Cultural e mestrado em Gestão Cultural. Foi também Professor no ISCTE, na Faculdade de Letras da Universidade de Lisboa e na Universidade Nova de Lisboa.
Presidiu à organização de Guimarães Capital Europeia da Cultura, em 2012, onde também desempenhou funções de programador. Foi comissário do Programa Caldas Cidade Cerâmica – Molda, entre 2015 e 2019, que conduziu à atribuição a Caldas da Rainha do título de cidade criativa pela UNESCO, promotor da candidatura de Alcobaça a Cidade Criativa da Gastronomia da UNESCO e coordenador do Conselho Estratégico da candidatura de Leiria a Capital Europeia da Cultura 2027.
Comissário de diversas exposições, nomeadamente “José Relvas: conspirador contemplativo”, na Assembleia da República. Participou e dirigiu projetos de investigação e publicou estudos sobre temas de história e património. Entre os mais recentes figuram o projeto “Cerâmica, Património e Produto Sustentável – do ensino à indústria” apoiado pela Fundação para a Ciência e Tecnologia e os estudos “Artista à Procura da sua História: Luís Ferreira da Silva (1928-2016)”, “Sudários de Vidro. Desenho e pintura de Tereza Arriaga sobre os Vidreiros da Marinha Grande”, para o Museu do Neorrealismo, sob coordenação de Raquel Henriques da Silva. Co-coordenou, com Jorge Simões, José Gameiro e José Pedro Castanheira, “Era uma vez Jorge Sampaio – Histórias e Imagens” (Lisboa, 2021). Para próxima edição, tem “O Parlamento na República (1910-1926)”, em colaboração com Luís Bigotte Chorão, obra patrocinada pela Assembleia da República, e “As Gárgulas da Torre do Tombo”, que resulta de um projeto de investigação apoiado pelo LIDA.
Coordenou a elaboração do Programa Preliminar para o Novo Museu de Cerâmica das Caldas da Rainha a solicitação da Câmara Municipal. Foi coordenador científico e cultural da Casa dos Patudos – Museu de Alpiarça, membro da Comissão de Conteúdos do Museu Nacional da Resistência e Liberdade de Peniche e integrou a Comissão Nacional para as Comemorações do Centenário da República.
Foi assessor e Chefe da Casa Civil do Presidente da República, entre 1997 e 2006.
Recebeu diversas condecorações atribuídas pelo desempenho de funções no âmbito das relações do Estado português com outros Estados (Luxemburgo, Itália, Grécia, França, Finlândia, Noruega, Tunísia, Argélia, Marrocos, Turquia, Canadá). Em Portugal exerceu as funções de vogal do Conselho das Ordens Nacionais e foi agraciado com a Grande Oficial da Ordem da Liberdade e a Grã Cruz da Ordem de Cristo (2005) e as medalhas de ouro das cidades de Caldas da Rainha (2000), Guimarães (2013) e Leiria (2022).
